We are now in the Chapel of the Black Madonna, the ancient little church of Santa Maria Mater Domini, the first chapel donated by the bishop of Padua to the Franciscans. Here Anthony lived and prayed; here he was buried and remained for 32 years, until 1263.
On the altar we find the statue that gives the chapel its name: the statue of the Black Madonna, so called because of its oriental features. Much loved by devotees, this painted stone was made in 1396 by Rinaldino di Francia.
